Sun and shade in St Ives

Half shaded by large trees, half basking in full sun, this garden design embraced the duality of this grand garden in St Ives, Cornwall. A series of subtle terraces bordered by sun-loving coastal perennials frame the journey from one space to the next, and add a welcome note of formality. Under the shade of mature trees at the bottom of the garden, an informal walkway ambles to a chunky oak bench, which in time will be enveloped by woodland favourites including Magnolia ‘Kobus’, Amelanchier lamarckii and Hydrangea ‘Limelight’. Three statement containers from Torc Pots offer a focal point from upper terrace, with atmospheric lighting throughout from Hunza. The team from Newquay Landscaping completed the hard landscaping works, with the first phase of the planting completed in May 2022.

What the client said:

"We were complete garden novices. We had a large space where we wanted to create a garden pretty much from scratch. Matt and Polly took our very unstructured thoughts and created a design that reflected everything we wanted even when it seemed contradictory. They have been involved every step of the way.

The team they pulled together to deliver the hard and soft landscaping have been brilliant. What has come through is their sense of passion and personal responsibility for the project. They have been great to work with and are really nice people! They made the project a lot less stressful than it could have been. And the garden looks fabulous."
